Open Meeting Of The WCDA 20th May 2008

Helpful Hints for Dyslexics of All Ages

The evening of helpful hints held in the Samaritans building, Church Street Whitehaven was well attended. The Committee brought an array of resources to share, including:

  • wobble boards
  • times table snap
  • making words snap
  • flexible multiplication squares
  • pens with comfort pads
  • stress balls
  • tinted reading rulers
  • board games
  • a CD of multiplication to Rap music which proved very popular.

Some items were on sale later.

Lots of interest was shown in the homemade resources on show, proving you don’t have to spend money to help your child or yourself. Our Treasurer delighted the audience when she demonstrated how the whole of the nine times table could be calculated on the hands.

Lots of information was available in the form of handouts, keeping all well informed as to how the school system works for children who need help.

We had a look at the WCDA website and I demonstrated software which I find invaluable both on my home computer and at work. Parents, children and adults enjoyed an evening of interaction joining in the brain gym session and trying out the wobble board.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening and we gained some new members. Thank you all for coming.

I would also like to thank all the Committee for bringing along all their bright ideas.
