Donation to Support WCDA Website

A WEST Cumbrian charity which supports people with dyslexia has had a cash boost to support its website.

Volunteers from West Cumbria Dyslexia Association were presented with a £100 cheque from the News & Star Charitable Trust Fund to pay for the charity's website for a year.

The association was founded in 1992 and helps dyslexic adults, children and families of those affected by dyslexia. It provides specialist advice and guidance for parents with dyslexic children, liaises with schools and adult education centres, holds meetings with visiting speakers and performs fundraising events.

A befriending session is held on the first Tuesday of the month for parents of dyslexic children at Lakes College West Cumbria, Lillyhall, between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

Each of the Association's volunteers have experience of living with dyslexia and the chairwoman. Doris Pearce, found out that she was dyslexic 12 years ago. “The money does mean a lot to us” said Mrs Pearce. "We get lots of hits on our website from as far as America. It isn't just the work that we do here on a one-to-one basis, the website is a whole different ball game and we can reach a lot more people through the website”.

So far this year, the Association has helped 83 local people who are affected by dyslexia. The Association is currently looking for qualified dyslexia assessors and tutors, and are asking suitable candidates to get in touch. For more information contact Mrs Pearce on 07863 329747.
